I specifically purchased this machine to pick up bird seed and it has done the job. I am able to get seeds out of areas that a regular old school vacuum would never be able to pick up. There is a specific tool to clean stairs. The filter needs to be washed out with just soap and water which is also convenient. I will never buy another brand vacuum ever. The Dyson is very easy to empty the debris as it is a bagless unit and has an easy released latch for the debris canister. Overall, I rate the unit an eight and a half out of ten. While the price was hard to stomach in the beginning, it ends up being worth the price in the longrun. The suction of the unit is stellar and second to none. You can use this unit on carpet, ceramic, or hardwoods with the same high performance and results. Further, the accessories are well-thought and placed well within the unit. There is an extendable wand with a ceiling fan adaptor, which is very, very handy. Another neat accessory is the mattress brush, which allows you to clean mattresses. It's really interesting to see how dirty a mattress can get and the Dyson does a great job in cleaning all of the dust, etc. In all, the unit weighs about 12 pounds, which isn't too heavy to carry up and down stairs. Most of the time, I can carry the vacuum in one hand and my two year old on my hip at the same time. I bought the vacuum from an on-line whole-seller for $439 with free shipping.
